Here’s What Students Need to Know About the ACT Reading Section By Master Tutor If you’re preparing for the ACT with the goal of raising your score on the ACT Reading section, it’s important to know what’s new and how to approach the passages and questions in this section of the exam. The test makers of the ACT released a new guidebook for the 2017-2018 year that made official what had been emerging as a new staple in the reading section of the test – dual passage problems. But before we get into the details of the ACT Reading section’s recent updates and what to keep in mind while preparing for the section, let’s take an overview of the reading section more generally. The Basics The ACT Reading section consists of four sets of passages and questions, each containing one long or two shorter passages that are designed, as held by the test makers, to be representative of the type and level of the reading required of a college-level freshman. The section has 40 questions and a time limit of 35 minutes. The order of the passage types will remain the same, regardless of the test: a literary fiction passage followed by a humanities (nonfiction narrative) passage, followed by a social sciences and natural sciences passage. The reading questions do not test for any knowledge beyond the scope of the passages, whether they are facts related to the passage or to the dictionary definitions of vocabulary words. The questions are designed to test for the complementary and supportive skills that readers use in understanding, processing, and paraphrasing written text across a range of subject areas. Dual-Passages The latest guidebook released by the makers of the ACT confirms what has been the recent emergence of the dual-passage question type, one that students can now expect to see on any upcoming ACT test. I’ve included of what the dual passage sections look like below. The ACT and the SAT tests have long imitated the other’s innovations, and the dual passage question type is one such example. The dual passage type requires that a student be especially diligent in their approach to the reading section and move methodically from part to part, passage to passage. The dual passage can place added pressure on the most challenging dimension of the reading section, which is time management; it’ll be important for students to prepare for the reading section with the dual passage in mind. The dual passage questions will ultimately test for the same inference and reasoning skills as the other passages: a student’s ability to infer the main idea or main function of a passage; locate and paraphrase significant details; understand the order of events; make comparisons of character or opinions within the passage; identify cause-effect relationships; determine the meaning of a word in the context in which it is used; draw generalizations; infer the author or narrator’s tone. Science Passages One of the most overlooked aspects in preparing for the ACT Reading section are the social science and natural science passage types. Students often times simply have not seen as many nonfiction articles or passage from the social or natural sciences in school as literary fiction or nonfiction, and this comparative lack of exposure can cause some particular difficulty. Therefore it’s key that students read widely in the range of science writing tested on the ACT, genres which can include Anthropology, Economics, History, Sociology, Psychology, Astronomy, Botany, Ecology, Medicine, and Zoology. How to Use the Partitive Genitive Case in Latin

The  genitive case  is most familiar to English speakers as the case in which nouns, pronouns and adjective  express possession, says the clear-thinking  Classics Department  at the Ohio State University. In Latin, it is used to indicate relationships that are most frequently and easily translated into English by the preposition of: love of god, the driver of the bus, the state of the union, the son of God. In all these instances, the prepositional phrase modifies a noun; that is, the prepositional phrase acts like an adjective: love of God equals Gods love equals divine love. Genitive Genetic Relationship The last example shows the genetic relationship that gives the genitive case its name. Linguists who have studied this case have concluded that it is a convenient way of indicating relationships between nouns, or, put in more grammatical terms, the genitive case turns any noun into an adjective. There are several categories of the genitive, depending mainly on their function. The partitive genitive is one of these categories. Partitive Genitive: How It Works The partitive genitive case, or the genitive of the whole, shows the relationship of a part to the whole of which it is part. It starts with a quantity, such as a numeral, nothing (nihil), something (aliquid), enough (satis) and the like.  This quantity is part of a whole, which is expressed by a noun in the genitive case. The simplest example is  pars civitatis   part of the state. Here, of course, the state (civitas) is the whole, and this party is the part (pars). This [is] a useful reminder that the English expression all of the state is  not  partitive, since all is not a part; consequently, you cannot use the genitive in Latin here, only an adjective:  omnis civitas, says OSU. If you have a part of something, the thing  thats the whole is in the genitive case. The fractional part can be a pronoun, adjective, noun or numeral designating quantity, with a noun or pronoun showing the whole to which the some (or many, etc.) belongs. Most of the following examples show the part in the nominative case. The whole is in the genitive since it signifies of the whole. The English translation may or may not have a word like of marking the genitive case. Leonardo da Vincis Last Years - Why was he in France

Born near Florence, Italy on April 15, 1452, Leonardo da Vinci became a rock star of the Italian Renaissance. His notebooks illustrate his genius in art, architecture, painting, anatomy, invention, science, engineering, and urban planning—a vast curiosity that defines what it is to be a Renaissance Man. Where should geniuses spend their final days? King Francis I might say France. From Italy to France: In 1515, the French King invited Leonardo to the royal summer home, Chà ¢teau du Clos Lucà ©, near Amboise. Now in his 60s, Da Vinci reportedly traveled by mule across the mountains from northern Italy to central France, carrying with him sketchbooks and unfinished artwork. The young French king had hired the Renaissance master as The Kings First Painter, Engineer and Architect. Leonardo lived in the rehabilitated Medieval fortress from 1516 until his death in 1519. Dreams for Romorantin, Actualizing the Ideal City: Francis I was barely 20-years-old when he became King of France. He loved the countryside south of Paris and decided to move the French capital to the Loire Valley, with palaces in Romorantin. By 1516 Leonardo da Vincis reputation was well-known—more so than the next generations young Italian upstart, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564). King Francis hired da Vinci, the seasoned professional, to carry out his dreams for Romorantin. Leonardo had already thought about a planned city while living in Milan, Italy, a city plagued with the same public health crisis that had ravaged Europe throughout the Middle Ages. For centuries outbreaks of the Black Death spread from city to city. Disease was not well-understood in the 1480s, but the cause was thought to be related to poor sanitation. Leonardo da Vinci loved to solve problems, so his planned city included inventive ways for people to live near water without polluting it. Plans for Romorantin incorporated many of Leonardos idealistic ideas. His notebooks show designs for a Royal Palace built on water; redirected rivers and manipulated water levels; clean air and water circulated with a series of windmills; animal stables built on canals where waste water could be safely removed; cobbled streets to facilitate travel and the movement of building supplies; prefabricated houses for relocating townspeople. Plans Change: Romorantin was never built. It appears that construction had begun in da Vincis lifetime, however. Streets were created, carts of stones were being moved, and foundations were laid. But as da Vincis health failed,  the young Kings interests turned to the less ambitious but equally opulent French Renaissance Chà ¢teau de Chambord, begun the year of da Vincis death. Scholars believe that many of the designs intended for Romorantin ended up in Chambord, including an intricate, helix-like spiral stairway. Da Vincis last years were consumed with finishing up The Mona Lisa, which he had carried with him from Italy, sketching more inventions into his notebooks, and designing the Kings Royal Palace at Romorantin. These were the last three years of Leonardo da Vinci—inventing, designing, and putting the finishing touches on some masterpieces. The Design Process: Architects often speak of the built environment, but many of Leonardos designs were unbuilt during his lifetime, including Romorantin and the ideal city. Project completion may be a goal of the architectural process, but Leonardo reminds us of the value of the vision, the design sketch—that design can exist without construction. Even today looking at a firms website, design competitions are often included on the Projects list, even if the contest is lost and the design is unbuilt. Design sketches are real, necessary, and, as any architect will tell you, repurposable. Da Vincis visions live on at Le Clos Lucà ©. Ideas and inventions from his sketchbooks have been built to scale and are exhibited at the Parc Leonardo da Vinci on the grounds of the Chà ¢teau du Clos Lucà ©. While the representation of Black men and women is one that throughout the years has not often been given thought to by people outside of the Black community, in the Moynihan Report and essays and speeches by both Angela Davis and Malcolm X, we see how the representation of Black people has for years been detrimental to the progression of the Black community. Amiodarone Drug interactions It increases the blood concentration in digoxin and potentiates the action of Coumadin, requiring the adaptation of doses 4. The association with other molecules extending the interval QT on the electrocardiogram increases the risk of occurrence of torsades peak, the rhythmic disorder that can result in discomfort or syncope. Because of its interaction with cytochrome P450, it alters the metabolism of several other drugs (Rang et al., 2016). In particular, it increases the risk of muscle damage in concomitant use with simvastatin 1. Its food and herbal interactions are not well established. Aspirin Drug Interactions Aspirin has drug-drug interactions with warfarin, corticosteroids, acetazolamide, valproic acid, methotrexate and herbal drugs e.g. Ginkgo biloba. To show the different costs for cars I have made achart on a later page. First, though, It probably would be good to tell alittle about used cars. Used cars are, for some, a good investment. The used car is good forcheap transportation, and fun. Used cars also have many different uses besidesjust driving around. Some people buy used cars so they can restore them, whileother people buy used cars for their children to drive. While still others getused cars for spare parts. The point is that used cars are good for manydifferent people, for many different reasons. Some people like to own new cars and so they get rid of their old carsto make room for the new car. This proves very useful for the person thatcannot afford a new car. Unfortunately, the used car is rarely in perfectcondition, and can sometimes require some minor repair. Of course, one cantexpect to find a great used car that does not cost more then a car in worsecondition, but this is to be expected. When one goes to buy a used car they should look for some key things,before buying the car:1. Check the cars interior thoroughly. Was the car kept clean all thistime or was it neglected? Is it up to what would be par?2. Get an unbiased mechanic to look at the engine and look over theentire car. Do they think that it is in good driving condition? Do you think itis in good driving condition?3. Look at the cars paint job. Is it what you would want? are thereany rust spots, dings, or scratches?4. Finally one must ask themself if the total car is what they wanted. If there is any doubt then they might want to rethink whether they really wantthis car. Thenwe need to multiply by the amount it costs for a tank of gas. In our case thatgas is about $13.00 a tank. That comes to about $1014 dollars a year on gas. Then we add about thirty dollars more for oil changes. Our total comesto about $ 1044 dollars.
